The Child Health International Foundation is a publicly funded, nonprofit charitable organization. Donations are tax deductible. The Foundation is supported through grants from private foundations, corporations, government agencies and individuals dedicated to the health of children.
Amongst the greatest priorities for Belarus is the health of its children. Already brutalized by World War II, in which 25% of households suffered a family loss, the vitality and health of its next generation is all the more critical. Not widely known, however, is the devastation produced in Belarus by the 1986 nuclear accident at Chernobyl:
- 70% of the radioactive fall-out occurred in Belarus
- 1.5 million persons were exposed to significant radioiodine
- 160,000 were young children less than 7 years of age
- Thyroid cancer in children has already increased
- 20,000 more children will develop cancer in the near future
- As much as 40% of the current health care expenditure in Belarus finances problems created in Chernobyl
With the endorsement of the Rector of the Minsk Medical Institute and the medical community in Belarus, The University Children's Medical Center is an unprecedented non-profit joint venture that includes the Minsk Medical Institute, the government of Belarus and the US health system. With a unique combination of public and private funding, this comprehensive Center will establish contemporary diagnostic and therapeutic services for all children with health problems.
Through the Center pediatric specialists from Belarus and the United States will collaborate to make modern care available for the many children in need.
The Child Health International Foundation has given the University Children's Medical Center its highest priority. Financial support is urgently needed if the devastation produced by Chernobyl is to be contained or reversed.
